The reserve is located in the center of the
province of Corrientes, 2 km (1.2mi) from Colonia Pellegrini, in the
area of Esteros del Iberá (Estuaries of Ibera), which in the Guaraní language
means "brilliant water." Covering an area of
approximately 1,200,000 hectares (2,965,000 acres), with the
objective of protecting the immense system of estuaries, swamps,
marshes, and lagoons of the Ibera basin. As one of the major natural
areas of the country, it contains amazing wildlife and flora. There
is enormous interest in this humid region because it represents an
exceptional ecosystem at its latitude; it has the benefit of
being a purely scientific paradise as its waters depend
exclusively on the rain. Since 1939, efforts have been made to declare the
Estuaries of Ibera as a National Park, having presented three plans to
Congress, the fruit of numerous negotiations between the
Administration of National Parks and the government of the Corrientes
Province. Because this initiative did not succeed
its main goal, the Correntino government decided to declare the
area the Ibera National Reserve through Law 3771 on April 15,
1983, with the intention of saving at least part of this natural
heritage (Patriomonio Natural). With scarce resources, they intend
to control poaching, at least in the southern region.
The reserve protects four species declared Natural Provincial
Monuments: the giant river otter, the maned wolf, the venison from
the grasslands, and the deer from the marsh area. The area also
possesses two species of Argentine alligators: the Black Yacaré,
and the broad-snouted caimen.
The area is also excellent for studying ornithology and bird
watching as there are some 350 different species of birds
represented here.
The Ibera Lagoon constitutes the epicenter of the reserve, where
you can find incomparable sightings of animal wildlife and one of
the most important wildlife refuges in the world.

(120mi) to the northeast of Mercedes and 870 km (540mi) to
the northeast of Buenos Aires.
