This small village is located on the shores of the
Argentinean Lake, founded in 1927, named after the thorny bushes that are
very abundant throughout the Andean Southern Patagonia. Its
microclimate transforms it into a green oasis in the middle
of the typically arid landscapes of the region.
El Calafate is the closest city from which to visit Glaciers
National Park and its famous Perito Moreno Glacier, declared a
National Heritage of Humanity (Patrimonio Natural de la Humanidad)
by UNESCO.
There are exemplary hotel and dining establishments in the city. The
city includes the Municipal Museum, which possesses zoological,
botanical, and pale ontological collections.
Close to the town are a number of attractive places that you can
easily access such as: the Wildlife Reserve of the Nimes Lagoon,
where it is possible to go on treks and see flamencos, silver
macaes, and black neck swans;
the residence of Nibepo Aike from which you can begin hikes
to the Glacier and reach the border with Chile; the Caves of
Gualicho and their rocky paintings and the Roca Lake, where you can
arrive on horseback, swim, and fish. In addition, there
is El Chaltén, where you can trek and climb until the base
camp of Fitz Roy mountain (almost 3,400 meters or 11,150 ft above
sea level). You can also go on lake excursions and hikes by less
known glaciers such as Upsala and Spegazzini.
The region of El Calafate is also characterized by its excellent
salmon fishing by different techniques such as fly, trolling, or
spinning, in addition to fishing for rainbow trout, confined
salmon, and trout from the lake.
You can also go rafting on the Santa Cruz river and mountain bike
on the outskirts of the village.
One of the strengths of this region is the rural tourism and that
there are many residences you can visit to witness typical
activities such as the "arreo" or the ringing of the
female sheep's bell and shearing sheep.
