Only 18 kilometers from Puerto Iguazú, the closest
city, are the Iguazú Falls in all their majesty, on the river with the same name.
They fall
from an altitude of 70 meters (230 ft), forming some 275
waterfalls with a length of 2.7 km (1.68miles), one of the
greatest marvels of the world. Some of the main falls are el Mitre, Belgrano, Rivadavia, Tres Mosqueteros
(Three Musketeers),
San Martín, Bozzetti, Dos Hermanas (Two Sisters) and the famous Garganta
del Diablo (Devil's Throat), of the most well known falls for its spectacular
size and aura. The latter marks the border with Brazil.
The cascades form part of the Iguazú National Park that is known
for its more than 400 different species of birds, animals such as
alligators and the coati, and more than 2,000 subtropical
vegetable species that were declared "Patrimonio
Mundial Natural de la Humanidad" (Natural World Heritage
for Humanity) by UNESCO in 1984.
The climate in the region is hot and extremely humid, with average
temperatures of 15°C (59°F) in the winter, and 25ºC (77°F)
in the summer. The best time to visit the area is between January
and March, during the rainy season.
The main activity here are the excursions to the waterfalls by
footpaths, steps, bridges, gangplanks, and balconies, which will
let you admire the beauty of this place from different angles.
There are paths in the jungle such as the Macuco and the Yacaratía,
favorites for nature lovers.
You can also go on excursions that include walks to the falls,
rides, and safaris by van or truck in the jungle. You can also go
trekking and on different rides in the El Dorado region to visit
the ruins of the Jesuit Missions such as those of San Ignacio Miní.
The tourism infrastructure is first rate here, with
accommodations, restaurants, souvenir shops, information offices,
etc.
